Vasomedical’s Dr. John Hui Featured in Asian American E-Zine

Following the recent EECP Therapy segment on “Long Island Naturally,” our very own Dr. John Hui was featured in a piece that ran in Asian American E-Zine, which highlights his work with EECP throughout the years.

The piece reports that EECP is “recommended for patients who may have exhausted other treatment methods.” These other treatment methods include antianginal medications, angioplasty and arterial stents, or bypass surgery. Studies show that EECP provides benefit long after the treatment is completed, with some patients remaining symptom free for years.

Dr. Hui is a leading authority on EECP Therapy and its benefits.  He holds a Bachelor’s degree in physics from International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan, obtained his Master’s degree from Cambridge in 1972 and his physics doctorate from Stony Brook in 1975.

Dr. Hui learned from the best: he studied EECP with Clifford Birtwell, the inventor of the concept of counterpulsation, from 1974 until Dr. Birtwell’s death in 1978, and has carried on Dr. Birtwell’s clinical research at Stony Brook. Hui began his research in cardiology with Birtwell after his own father died of a heart attack in 1973.

Patient Spotlight: EECP Therapy is Treatment of Choice for Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith

Reverend Beckwith, the founder and spiritual director of Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles, has been visiting Global Cardio Care for about eight years and is a huge advocate for EECP Therapy.

The Reverend has been receiving EECP Therapy since 2004 as a preventative treatment to ensure his system is functioning to its best capacity and he has optimal blood flow. Due to a hectic schedule which includes a great deal of travel and public speaking, he believes maintaining his system and focusing on his circulation and healthy diet are critical.

According to Rev. Beckwith:

“It is essential, if someone is going to do their life work, if someone’s going to release their gifts, their talents, their capacities – which is what I teach – they need to be healthy. It’s a sad thing to see someone who has a great dream within their heart and soul but can’t manifest it because they’re sick all the time.”

In the video, the Reverend discusses not only his excellent experience with EECP Therapy, but relays the positive experiences of several members of his congregation as well.

Local Spotlight on EECP Therapy: Long Island Appreciates the Natural Alternative

A segment on “Long Island Naturally” on News 12 Long Island featured EECP Therapy. As Long Island is our home base here at Vasomedical, we were thrilled to see EECP Therapy touted on our TVs.

Commonly recognized as one of the best kept secrets in modern medicine, Dr. Lawson, Dr. Hui and their patients spoke to News12 Correspondent, Mary Mucci, about the benefits of the treatment, noting how the treatment can restore heart function without the risk and high cost of surgery.

During the segment, patient Carl Montalbano noted he “decided to give [EECP Therapy] a shot as he had tried everything else” and as a result of undergoing the treatment he now “feels like the energizer bunny.” We love testimonials because they truly show the live changing impact EECP Therapy has on patients’ lives.

Tales from the Heart: Hawaii Edition II

When a scary health issue occurs, it can change your life in an instant, which is what happened to one patient in Hawaii.

At age 46, Ken – a husband and father of two small children – suffered a near fatal heart attack while driving. Luckily, he arrived at the hospital in time to undergo a life-saving stenting procedure. While the procedure saved his life, there was a long way to go to heal his heart.

Ken’s quality of life was compromised after the procedure: he struggled with overwhelming physical and metal fatigue, chest pains, shortness of breath and depression. The doctors also uncovered that he had a second coronary blockage that was inoperable. Ken left the doctor’s office feeling down, like he had no treatment options, which is when a friend introduced him to Island Heart Care and EECP Therapy. Ken said:

I went in and talked to the nurse. Then went home and did a lot of research on EECP. The theory and research supporting EECP was so sound in my mind, it was a no-brainer! If EECP could help me function again and was not invasive, I was going for it!”

After completing a course of EECP Therapy, Ken can now engage in exercise and walk almost three miles each day. He has returned to work part time and finally feels like his children have their father back.

We love receiving great success stories like this. If you or a loved one has a story about your experience with EECP Therapy, please share it with us at vaso@kcsa.com.

Tales from the Heart: Hawaii Edition

Health issues can arise at any time – whether you’re relaxing at home or on a much needed vacation. Our latest story comes from Peter Happi, a Waikoloa resident on the big island of Hawaii, who began experiencing a shortness of breath while on vacation in Canada. Aware something may be wrong he decided to seek medical help.

Mr. Happi was originally diagnosed with altitude sickness, but he wasn’t convinced that was the whole story.

After undergoing numerous additional tests, Mr. Happi found out that he had nine blockages in his coronary arteries. He eventually underwent coronary bypass surgery and made lifestyle changes, but he continued to suffer from the symptoms of congestive heart failure such as shortness of breath, fatigue and swelling.

It was then, after his discomfort prompted him to do additional research, that he came across Island Heart Care and uncovered a noninvasive treatment called EECP Therapy. Mr. Happi completed the entire course of EECP Therapy – 35 hours – and as a result showed a significant improvement in his quality of life and functional ability.

As you may know, published clinical studies have shown that 75-80 percent of patients who have undergone EECP Therapy treatment have experienced a reduction or elimination of symptoms and a vast improvement in their ability to enjoy life. Mr. Happi is a  great example of the benefits of EECP Therapy.

This story is not uncommon and we’d love to hear more success stories from EECP Therapy patients out there. If you have a story to tell and would like to share it with us, please email us at vaso@kcsa.com.

EECP Therapy Week Goes Global

As many of you know, last week was EECP® Therapy Week, which occurs the last week in February (American Heart Month) annually. This year, to help celebrate the efficacy of EECP Therapy and increase access for patients, our colleagues in India launched their first EECP patient awareness program.

During the course of the week patient awareness programs were conducted in Tamil Nadu Government Medical Hospital with the goal of patients to become aware of conventional cardiac risk factors and how life style changes can reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

The Tamil Nadu Government Medical Hospital recently incorporated EECP Therapy treatments into its flagship program called the Non-Invasive Ischemic Burden Reduction Program (NIBR-P). Currently, the hospital is the largest EECP center in India with five EECP Therapy systems allowing them to complete treatment for 45 patients per month at capacity.

Our IETA colleagues in India have big plans when it comes to raising awareness about EECP Therapy! In 2014 the group plans to work with physicians and therapists to develop a computer simulation training program on inflation and deflation timing to improve the understanding of this important component of EECP Therapy.
