Tales from the Road: ACC 2015

Our participation in the American College of Cardiology 64th annual Scientific Sessions last month in San Diego appears to have been very successful. The traffic to our booth was extremely high and a large number of visitors, from the United States and overseas, expressed interest in our products. Attendees were curious in our core technology EECP® (Enhanced External Counterpulsation) therapy and our growing patient monitoring product line.

Additionally, Dr. Joseph Tartaglia on behalf of his co-authors from the New York Medical College in Valhalia, New York presented a poster abstract on EECP® Therapy and the positive effect it has on decreasing the risk of Major Adverse Cardiac Events (referred to as MACE) for patients. The poster was titled “Patients That Respond to Enhanced External Counterpulsation Are at Decreased Risk for Major Adverse Cardiac Events and Have Increases in Endothelial Precursor Stem Cells”. The study, which followed up on the participating patients for 96 months, demonstrated that these patients had an increase in exercise capacity post treatment and had fewer major adverse cardiac events after treatment. It showed that patients with increased exercise capacity also had an increase in peripheral endothelial precursor CD133+ cells. This suggests, according to the authors, that the new collateral vessel development resulting from the EECP® treatment is responsible for the improved outcomes.

Our next exhibition will be at the Hospitalar meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil in May. We look forward to showcase our EECP Therapy and our patient monitoring product line to the growing medical industry in Latin America.

Tales from the Road – Arab Health

We’ve just departed from Dubai having completed a very successful Arab Health exposition. The Vasomedical booth included displays, graphics and demonstrations from all segments of our company profile, including EECP® and ECP therapy systems, Biox’ new ECG Holter and ambulatory blood pressure monitors and our wireless MobiCare™ patient monitoring products. Our booth location was ideal, we were in one of the convention center’s main concourses and was extremely busy throughout the whole show. We were joined in the booth by our associates from Biox and VSK, Vasomedical’s newest joint venture for marketing and sales of EECP/ECP technology globally. Together we welcomed many visitors from all over the Middle East, as well as visitors from North America, Europe and India.

This show allowed us to increase our exposure in the Middle East. There are treatment centers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, the Sudan, Bahrain, Oman and Israel. Many physicians in the region are familiar with the clinical benefits of the therapy and are very interested in bringing the technology to their local hospitals and clinics.

Biox – MobiCare™ wireless patient monitoring products attracted a high level of interest at the show. The flexibility to un-tether the patient from the monitor using Bluetooth technology is very unique. Along with the added feature of remote viewing capabilities away from the clinical setting by physicians, healthcare workers and patient families, it was evident that MobiCare™ was one of the most interesting new products seen by many of the attendees.

Tales From the Road: Medical Fair Asia 2014

As Medical Fair Asia comes to a close in Singapore on Sept 11th, 2014, many of us are reflecting on this day. 13 years ago millions of people went to sleep not knowing the world was about to change forever. We continue to think about the people we lost that day and will keep them and their families in our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers.

Medical Fair Asia has been another successful meeting. There were constant visitors to our booth, they came from all over Southeast Asia to participate in this show, which is one of the largest medical industry conferences in the Asian market.  Hospital and healthcare administrators, physicians and many distributors came to our booth wanting to see our products; they were especially interested in MobiCare®, a unique wireless patient monitoring system with flexible communications capabilities.

MobiCare frees the patients from typical bedside monitoring and allows them the freedom to move about the room and nearby areas with comfort and safety. In addition, the ability to perform remote viewing functions by authorized personnel expanded the potential capabilities to meet multiple needs of a quickly growing and more challenging healthcare marketplace. The need for safe and reliable monitoring for patients is no longer limited to bedside monitoring in the hospital, nor does it stop when the patient is discharged. There is a rapidly growing need to provide better medical services in some of the most unique situations and MobiCare’s communication flexibility meets that monitoring challenge head on.

Though there have been a few scattered EECP Therapy systems throughout the region, EECP Therapy is not generally well known in Southeast Asia. Some of our distributors visited us to discuss opportunities and projects they are currently working on and plans to expand awareness in their designated territories. While most healthcare professionals in the region are not aware of the therapy, our participation in international shows expands awareness of the therapy and is creating a bigger audience for its acceptance. Many new distributors visited our booth and expressed interest in becoming our authorized representative in their respective countries for EECP Therapy, as well as our Biox ECG Holter and ambulatory monitoring products.

We also had an opportunity to learn more about the regulatory and typical marketing practices in many of the countries represented here. Having a better understanding and establishing connections in this region will help us ensure we approach the markets in the best way possible to create opportunities to generate revenue, while controlling and monitoring expenses.

Make sure to stay tuned for more tales from the road as we continue to showcase and educate the healthcare industry about EECP Therapy technology and our other offerings.

Tales From the Road – European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in Barcelona

The last three and a half days exhibiting and demonstrating our EECP® Therapy and Biox products at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in Barcelona were extremely busy, slightly challenging at times, and very, very rewarding. Attendee traffic at our booth was very good due to a number of factors but especially the pre-show preparation which included setting up key meeting with prospective customers and mailing invitations to distributors, physicians, hospital and government personnel to visit our booth. Visitors enjoyed the opportunity to learn about our company, our products and how we can help them meet the challenges of providing more cost-effective healthcare to a rapidly growing and aging patient population in their respective countries.

Bolstered by the inclusion, for the first time, of EECP® Therapy in the ESC guidelines on the management of stable coronary artery disease with a IIa class recommendation, we received a significant amount of new and renewed interest in EECP® Therapy. In the addenda to the writing committees, after they had reviewed the large volume of clinical literature regarding EECP® Therapy, stated, “The results of these studies proving the concept and clinical effects of EECP treatment lead to the recommendation that EECP Therapy should be considered for symptomatic treatment in patients with invalidating refractory angina.”

In addition, a poster, entitled the “Long-term clinical outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease and moderate angina pectoris treated with enhanced external counterpulsation” by Dr. Ozlem Soran, et al, from the University of Pittsburgh Medical, Pittsburg, PA, was presented in this year’s ESC annual meeting. In the abstract, the authors summarized the clinical benefits by stating that “Patients presenting for EECP treatment with class II angina had different baseline profiles compared with Class III and IV angina. However, both cohorts achieved substantial reduction in angina with high event free survival rates at 2 years.”

There was considerable interest shown by both cardiologists as well as the administrators of hospitals, clinics and private physician practices in the company’s latest offering, the MobiCare™ wireless vital signs patient monitor. The comprehensive monitoring features and the unique communications capabilities of MobiCare™ provide clinician with accurate patient information and optimal flexibility to view the patient’s vital signs remotely on a tablet or smart phone.

Supported by our colleagues from Biox as well as personnel from our European and Korean distributors, the exhibition booth, though very busy at times, was well covered and it soon became customary to hear at least three or four foreign languages spoken in the booth simultaneously.

During the exhibition we closed multiple sales deals, including the sale of the Lumenair™ EECP® Therapy system used for live demonstrations in the show right out of the booth.

EECP Patient Receives Quilt Of Valor

When we received this story from Doris Osborne, the president of the International EECP Therapy Association (IETA) and EECP Coordinator of the Ohio Heart and Vascular Center in Cincinnati, OH, we knew we had to share it on our blog as well.

Below, read the story about one patient Doris worked with and the great gift this woman gave another patient after treatment.

Hannah Kratzer was being treated with EECP® Therapy here at Ohio Heart & Vascular Center when she heard William Sandlin talking about his time in Vietnam in the EECP® bed next to hers.  Being a member of the Ohio Valley Quilters Guild of Hamilton County, she asked me if it would be possible for her and the Administrator of the Quilt of Valor Foundation to honor him with a Quilt of Valor in our EECP® clinic.  She told me that the mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover each of our service members and veterans who have been wounded or touched by war with a healing and comforting Quilt of Valor.  My answer was YES.

William Sandlin and Hannah Kratzer

Mrs. Kratzer and Kathy Saunders, Administrator of the Quilts of Valor of Cincinnati, presented Mr. Sandlin with the Quilt of Valor. He was very surprised to receive the honor. He said, “I feel really humbled and grateful to receive this Quilt of Valor.  This is the first time I have ever received anything like this in my entire life.”

Doris would like to take the opportunity to encourage all EECP Therapy Clinics to team up with a Quilt Guild in order to honor a vet. To locate local Quilt of Valor groups, please visit http://www.qovf.org/localqov-list.html.

In her posting Doris suggests that as part of EECP® Therapy Awareness Week EECP® centers around the country set aside one day during Heart Month in February 2015 to present a Quilt of Valor to one or two of their patients. Centers that are interested in participating should start by contacting Doris at info@ietaonline.com to coordinate this IETA promoted national event.

The mission of the IETA is to educate patients, EECP therapists and physicians on how EECP Therapy can help give relief to the hearts of patients who have refractory angina.

At Vasomedical, we fully support our veterans, and are happy to bring any additional joy we can to their lives – from EECP Therapy to Quilts of Honor!

Local Patient Spotlight: “EECP Therapy is Marvelous”

As you know, we at Vasomedical love hearing success stories from patients. This week, we spoke to one Manhattan-based patient, a 74 year old man who asked to remain anonymous on the blog. He took a few minutes out of his day to tell us his story.

Before his treatment, the patient said that he was bent over and was only able to walk two to three blocks before getting tired. He is diabetic and had unfortunately lost all feeling in one of his feet in addition to having two herniated discs in his back.

Upon hearing about EECP Therapy from a friend, he went to check it out. “At that point, I figured I had nothing to lose,” he told us.

“Now I can walk for miles and I’m standing up straight; last weekend I walked five miles with no trouble at all. I’d also say I’ve gotten about 75 percent of the feeling back in my one foot. It has been night and day – EECP Therapy is a marvelous thing, it changed my life.”

The patient says he now recommends EECP Therapy to anyone who asks and notes that he can do things that he couldn’t do before.

This story is not uncommon and we love to hear success stories. If you have a story to tell, please email us at vaso@kcsa.com.
